Milestone 15 –Distance: 2,844.1 km (58.3%) – 8 April 2021
It’s a good time to take a breather and to see how far we’ve travelled across the Yemen so far.
The mainland is made up of a mountainous interior surrounded by narrow coastal plains to the east, south and west, with the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter or sand desert) to the north leading to Saudi Arabia.
We’ve highlighted the beauty of the wadis (river valleys) which intersperse the highland regions, notably Shibam and Wadi Dawan in central Yemen, located in Wadi Hadhramaut in the eastern governate in Yemen. As well as the mysterious island of Socotra to the south.
We’re continuing in a south westerly direction where we will see the last bastion of British rule in the Yemen and then we begin our ascent into the Yemeni Mountains heading towards Saudi Arabia stopping at some gems on the way.
